This week we got to explore Happy Valley Goose Bay in the best, most Labradorian way possible– behind a dogsled team!
We visited Northern Lights Dog Sledding, where we got to meet the dogs and help get them ready. After a crash course in the do’s and dont’s of driving a team (the abbreviated version– don’t let the dogs fight, and don’t tip going around corners!), we were off!
Trev took control first, hopping onto the skis while I settled into the basket, and prayed that he wouldn’t tip us over! The dogs were super eager to be off (they clearly love their job!), though we did have to stop a couple times to switch around a “Labradorian flat tire” (in other words, a couple of the more “leisurely” pups had to be rotated with the other team to make sure everyone was doing their job properly)! Halfway through our trip Trev and I switched roles– after a smooth first half of the ride, the pressure was now on me to not bugger it up! Ha! (Thank goodness I didn’t, otherwise Trevor wouldn’t have let me live it down!)
This experience has definitely been one of the highlights since moving out here, and there is no better way to experience the Big Land than behind a dogsled team. With an endless blue sky above you, and absolutely nothing for miles around besides snow, spruce, and mountains, it makes you feel so small (in the best possible way)!
